Gwyneth Paltrow, known for her iconic role as Pepper Potts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), took to Instagram during the 2024 Oscars to share her joy over her longtime co-star Robert Downey Jr.’s first Academy Award win. Despite being at home and in the midst of hair and makeup, Paltrow ensured she didn’t miss the moment as Downey secured the Oscar for best supporting actor for his remarkable performance in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” Watching the event unfold on her laptop, Paltrow captured the heartwarming moment, echoing the sentiment of Marvel fans everywhere: “Whatever it takes.”

Paltrow, herself an Oscar winner for her role in “Shakespeare in Love,” shares a special bond with Downey, forged over their roles as Pepper Potts and Tony Stark in the groundbreaking 2008 film “Iron Man,” which kickstarted the MCU phenomenon. Their on-screen chemistry continued through two more “Iron Man” films and various appearances in other MCU installments, including “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

“Oppenheimer” marked a significant milestone in Downey’s career, earning him his third Oscar nomination and first win. His portrayal of the legendary figure completed a remarkable sweep across major award ceremonies, including the Golden Globes, Critic’s Choice Awards, SAG Awards, and BAFTA Film Awards.

In his acceptance speech, Downey humorously thanked his wife, Susan Downey, and his collaborators on “Oppenheimer,” including director Christopher Nolan and co-stars Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt. He also reflected on the transformative impact of the role, acknowledging how the project enriched his life personally and professionally.

Despite their monumental contributions to the MCU, both Paltrow and Downey concluded their journeys with the franchise in 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” Downey’s character, Tony Stark, met a poignant end in the film, prompting speculation about potential returns. However, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige affirmed that Stark’s emotional arc would be preserved, indicating no plans for Downey’s return.

Following his collaboration with Nolan, Downey ventures into the realm of television with the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer,” helmed by acclaimed director Park Chan-wook. Set to premiere on April 14, the series marks another exciting chapter in Downey’s illustrious career.

As Paltrow and Downey continue to pursue new endeavors beyond the MCU, their enduring friendship and shared cinematic legacy serve as a testament to the lasting impact of Marvel’s groundbreaking universe.
