Apple Issues Alert: iPhone Users Targeted in Global ‘Mercenary Spyware Attack’
Apple has issued a global security alert to iPhone users across 92 countries, warning them of a targeted mercenary spyware attack aimed at compromising their devices. The tech giant sent out threat notification emails, cautioning recipients about the sophisticated nature of the attack and urging them to take immediate action to safeguard their sensitive information.
The alert, detected by Apple’s security systems, signals a rare and complex form of cyber threat known as a mercenary attack. The recent alert also drew attention to the infamous Pegasus spyware developed by Israel’s NSO Group, highlighting its association with previous surveillance incidents targeting Apple users. Apple’s legal action against the NSO Group in 2021 underscored the company’s commitment to holding accountable those responsible for unauthorized surveillance activities. Pegasus has been implicated in multiple instances of unauthorized surveillance since 2016, targeting journalists, lawyers, political dissidents, and human rights activists worldwide.
